Should I Get a Real Estate License?

There are many questions you should answer if you are considering getting your real estate license. Though the true answer can ultimately only be found yourself, here are a few things to think about:

  1. Will it make you happy? Of course the most important question is always regarding your personal interest. You will be horrible at selling real estate if you aren’t happy doing it. Since the crash of 2008, there are certainly fewer people getting into real estate because they think it is an easy way to get rich and much more doing it because they have a passion for the business. Regardless, it is the most basic element of deciding whether or not to get into real estate, or any other business for that matter.
  2. How does the market look? You should look at the market trends and analyze to the best of your ability, but it is nearly impossible to know exactly where the market is going. The most important thing to consider is that regardless of where the market goes and home values, people will always be buying and selling homes. The key is to understand what people want and adjust your real estate business accordingly. Homes are being sold, you just have to be the one selling them.

  3. Are you good with people? Your entire real estate business will rely on a few simple things, your ability to get leads and turn leads into sales. Everything else in your business happens only as a result of these things. You can consult the books to double check the current mortgage rates, but you better be able to get leads and make sales or you won’t have a leg to stand on. Being good with people is absolutely critical to that success. The internet and social media makes it even easier to connect with leads and potential clients. Be sure to get our free e-book on marketing yourself with social media.

  4. Can you motivate yourself? Real estate is one of those unique industries where you can sit around all day and nobody will say a word to you. Of course you won’t get a paycheck either. To be good at real estate, you have to set your own schedule and be committed to doing the things that will make you a success. Learn the processes and procedures that work for you and don’t let yourself do anything different. Great businesses are built on solid foundations and a commitment to following that path toward success.

These are just a few things to consider when you are thinking about getting into the real estate profession. There is risk with every decision, but there is always risk with every passed opportunity. So should you become a real estate agent? Ask yourself all these questions and be honest. If it’s the right career for you, you will know.
